John Boorman’s Exorcist 2: The Heretic was changed during the first week of its opening on screens due to the negative and hostile reaction of the viewers towards the movie. The highly expected and favoured movie’s sequel was disliked b the audience and was not favoured by the critics as well.
The movie made has made its appearances in the worst ever made movies in the history frequently. When the movie was release the writer of the book ,on which the movie is made ,was the first one to start laughing in the theatres and when the director of the film William Friedkin, claimed it was “as bad as seeing a traffic accident in the street. It was horrible. It’s just a stupid mess made by a dumb guy.” Even the man who made it, Oscar-nominated director John Boorman, admitted he’d probably made a mistake in creating a film that has no real interest in pandering to audience expectations.
After the first Exorcist remains the second highest grossing movie in the 19703’s the director of the movie realised that making the sequel of the same was indeed an impossible job which he had taken in his hands. The movies controversial content pulled out people on streets in cities of UK , inspired walk outs from the movies and also occasional throwing up in the theatres as a mark of protest.
While the movies were being disapproved by the audience Boorman was busy editing the prints of the movie to make it look more acceptable. He made several small changes with includes small scene cuts and cosmetic changes. He also cut the entire ending of the movie which was one sign of relief from the audience. It was noted that Boorman worked on six prints each day but by then the movie is spread across the entire state and whatever he was up to he was definitely going to lose the battle.
Boorman’s edits did not make a huge change in movies review and further confused the audience . The critics were not kind to the movie as well with most review panning the decision of even making the movie- some even called it the worst made movie ever.
It took next 13 years for the next Exorcist movie to release but by then people’s interest in the subject had disappeared till then. Based on his novel Legion, a direct follow up to The Exorcist, Blatty wrote and directed Part 3. It wasn’t a commercial hit but got fairly good reviews from the critics and ended up having a huge fan following.
